Long road to recovery may be over for Braintree's Jamie

Former Colchester United striker Jamie Guy could be set to make his long-awaited first-team return for Braintree Town as they head to Lincoln City in the Blue Square Bet Premier tomorrow.

Apart from a couple of reserve team appearances earlier this season, the 24-year-old hasn’t featured for the Iron in almost a year since a double open fracture of his leg during their Blue Square Bet South promotion campaign last year.

It was initially feared that the horrific injury at Eastleigh last February, when Guy broke his fibula and tibia, may end the striker’s career, but he courageously battled back to fitness over the summer.

He was sidelined for a total of ten months, before heading to Blue Square Bet South strugglers Thurrock for a loan spell at the end of last year, but a calf strain cut that short.

However, Iron boss Alan Devonshire says Guy is likely to be included in the squad to face the Imps tomorrow.

Having lost Andy Yiadom to League Two side Barnet and Chib Chilaka to Harrogate Town this week and with Ben Wright serving the second of a three-match suspension, Devonshire is short of forward options.

He admitted that bringing Guy back was a touch out of necessity, but he also feels the former U’s frontman is ready to rejoin Braintree’s first-team ranks.

He said: “It is a little bit of both really.

“But I won’t rush Jamie back and I’ll only put him on if he feels it’s right for him.

“I’m hoping that I may be able to get him on for 15 to 20 minutes at the end.”

Devonshire is also set to recall Ryan Peters into the side after the full-back recovered from a calf injury, but Dave Stevens is still out with a knee problem.

Stevens saw a specialist earlier this week and is due to get the results of that scan over the next few days.
