Water companies' Colchester drought warning
2:36pm Wednesday 22nd February 2012
A DROUGHT could hit Colchester if residents don’t help to save water, utilities companies have warned.
Large parts of the South East are officially in a drought, according to warnings from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
But, whilst Colchester was not included on the DEFRA map, Anglian Water said a shortage is likely this summer.
It is advising people to think twice before reaching for their taps.
Ciaran Nelson, head of media, said: “Colchester has an obligation to try and save water this year more than any other.
“If we have escaped the official classification of a drought it is by luck more than anything.
“We may only be in the ‘at risk’ category but so was most of the country last year.”
The drought is the result of two unusually dry winters in consecutive years.
